I’m Karter “KJ” Leuallen, owner of Raven Counseling—an independently operated counseling business in Grand Junction, Colorado.
I work with teens, adults, veterans, couples, and families, with a particular interest in trauma, relationships, neurodivergence, and helping people understand themselves.
Sometimes talking about what you’re going through is hard. You may know something feels wrong without having words for it—or you may have told your story many times and still feel stuck. My relational, experiential approach makes room for different ways of communicating and processing.
My Approach
Therapy doesn’t have to be only sitting across from someone and talking. Creative and experiential approaches—including sandtray—can offer another way to express, explore, and make meaning of difficult experiences.
I believe meaningful therapy begins with curiosity rather than judgment. We can work together to understand patterns, recognize strengths, build practical tools, and explore changes that fit your life.

My work draws on EMDR, somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches, sandtray and expressive methods, trauma-informed care, and Gottman-informed relationship concepts.
We select interventions together according to your needs, readiness, and goals, within my training, supervision, and scope of competence.

I’m especially drawn to teens who find talk therapy limiting, veterans navigating trauma and transitions, neurodivergent teens and adults, and couples or families seeking connection.
Sometimes we talk. Sometimes we use sandtray or creative materials. Sometimes we focus on body cues, regulation, or relationships.
About our practice relationship
Raven Counseling is an independently operated counseling business owned by Karter “KJ” Leuallen. Raven Counseling and Illuminate Play Therapy & Counseling are separate businesses. Illuminate contracts with Raven Counseling for KJ’s professional counseling services. Raven Counseling is not owned by Illuminate.
Depending on how services are arranged, appointments, administrative systems, billing, or insurance arrangements may be coordinated through Illuminate. Before treatment begins, clients will be informed of the applicable practice, billing provider, consent requirements, and privacy practices.
